Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF): What You Should Know 氟化氨銀(SDF)治療注意事項

2026/3/3

What Is SDF?

Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a liquid medicine that contains silver and fluoride.
It is used to:

  • Slow down the progress of tooth decay (cavities)
  • Reduce tooth sensitivity

To keep it working well, SDF usually needs to be applied 2–3 times a year.
Please note: SDF does not replace fillings. Cavities may still need further dental treatment later.

Who Should NOT Use SDF?

SDF may not be suitable if you:

  • Are allergic to silver
  • Have sores, ulcers, or blisters on the inside of your mouth

Possible Side Effects or Limitations

  • The treated cavity will turn black. This means the medicine is working and does not harm your health. Healthy parts of the tooth will not turn black.
  • If SDF treatment is stopped, the cavity may continue to get worse and may need other dental treatments.
  • The liquid may have a metallic or bitter taste.
  • If the liquid touches the gums or skin, it may cause temporary brown or white stains. These stains usually fade on their own within 1–3 weeks.
